UTEP Miners History
The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Miners have a rich and storied history in collegiate athletics, particularly in sports like football and basketball. Established in 1914, UTEP originally started as the Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy. The Miners' football program began in 1914, and over the decades, it has seen various levels of success, including notable bowl appearances and conference championships. UTEP's basketball team gained national recognition in the 1960s, particularly under the guidance of legendary coach Don Haskins, who led the Miners to their first NCAA championship in 1966. Haskins is celebrated for breaking racial barriers by starting five African-American players in the championship game, which contributed significantly to the integration of college basketball.
