    UAB Blazers History

The UAB Blazers, representing the University of Alabama at Birmingham, have a storied history in collegiate athletics that began in the early 1970s. The university established its football program in 1991, and the Blazers quickly made their mark in Conference USA (C-USA) after joining in 1995. Over the years, the Blazers have experienced significant achievements, including several bowl appearances and conference championships. The program faced challenges, notably the controversial decision to cut football in 2014, which sparked widespread outcry and support from the community, alumni, and fans. This grassroots movement ultimately led to the reinstatement of the football program in 2017, allowing the Blazers to continue their legacy in college sports. UAB’s athletic programs have since expanded, with notable success in basketball, where the men’s team has made several NCAA tournament appearances, showcasing the school's commitment to competitive athletics and providing a platform for student-athletes to excel.
