    South Carolina Upstate Spartans History

    The South Carolina Upstate Spartans, representing the University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg, South Carolina, have a rich history that dates back to their inception in 1967. Initially known as the USC Spartanburg, the institution transitioned to a four-year university in 2004 and officially became known as the University of South Carolina Upstate in 2004. The Spartans began their intercollegiate athletic programs in the early 1970s and joined the NCAA in 1987, competing in Division II before moving to Division I in 2007.
