North Dakota State Bison History
The North Dakota State Bison, representing North Dakota State University (NDSU) in Fargo, have a rich history in collegiate athletics, particularly in football. The Bison's football program began in 1894 and has since evolved into one of the most successful programs in NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) history. The team has a storied legacy, with its first significant success occurring in the 1960s and 70s when they captured multiple national championships in the NAIA. The transition to NCAA Division II in the 1970s saw further success, but it wasn't until the 2004 move to FCS that the Bison truly began to dominate. Under the leadership of head coach Craig Bohl, the team won its first national championship in the FCS in 2011, which ignited a dynasty. The Bison have gone on to win multiple national titles since then, including a remarkable run of five consecutive championships from 2011 to 2015. This unprecedented success has established the Bison as a powerhouse in college football, with a passionate fan base and a strong tradition of excellence.
