Norfolk State Spartans History
The Norfolk State Spartans are the athletic teams representing Norfolk State University, located in Norfolk, Virginia. Established in 1935, the university has a rich history in collegiate athletics. Initially, the Spartans competed in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) before transitioning to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in 1997. The Spartans have a storied tradition, particularly in basketball, where they gained national prominence in the early 2010s. The men's basketball team achieved a historic upset in the 2012 NCAA Tournament by defeating the second-seeded Missouri Tigers, marking a significant milestone for the program and enhancing the university's visibility. Over the years, the Spartans have also made strides in other sports, including football, track and field, and women's basketball, contributing to a well-rounded athletic program that fosters student-athletes' development both on and off the field.
