Long Island University Sharks Football History
Long Island University (LIU) Sharks Football has a rich history that dates back to the team's inception in 1938. Originally known as the LIU Blackbirds, the program enjoyed various levels of success over the decades, competing in different conferences and divisions. The team had notable periods of achievement, especially during the mid-20th century when they participated in the NCAA College Division. However, like many collegiate programs, the football team faced challenges over the years, including fluctuations in funding, changes in the athletic department, and the eventual discontinuation of the program in 1972. After a long hiatus, the football program was revived in 2018, rebranding as the LIU Sharks, marking a new era for collegiate football on Long Island. The Sharks joined the Northeast Conference (NEC) and have since been working to build a competitive team while also enhancing school spirit and community engagement through their games.
