Lake Superior State Lakers History
The Lake Superior State Lakers, representing Lake Superior State University (LSSU) in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, have a storied history in collegiate athletics, particularly known for their ice hockey program. Established in 1966, the Lakers were a member of the NAIA before moving to NCAA Division II and finally to NCAA Division I, where they have made a significant impact in the world of college hockey. The men’s ice hockey team gained national prominence in the late 1980s, winning back-to-back NCAA Division I championships in 1988 and 1989. Under the guidance of notable coaches and featuring skilled players, the Lakers became a formidable opponent in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) and later in the WCHA (Western Collegiate Hockey Association).
