    East Texas A&M Lions History

    The East Texas A&M Lions, representing East Texas A&M University, have a storied history in collegiate athletics that dates back to the early 20th century. Originally known as the East Texas State Normal College, the institution began participating in competitive sports in the 1900s. The football program, initiated in 1904, quickly became a point of pride for the school, with the Lions achieving early success in the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Over the decades, the Lions expanded their athletic offerings, adding sports like basketball, baseball, and track and field. In 1971, the university transitioned to a university system, officially becoming East Texas A&M University, and the Lions adopted their current name, further solidifying their identity as a competitive force in NCAA athletics. Throughout their history, the Lions have produced numerous standout athletes who went on to achieve great success both in college and professional sports, while also fostering a passionate fan base that has supported the program through thick and thin.
