    Georgetown Hoyas History

The Georgetown Hoyas are the athletic teams representing Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. The history of the Hoyas dates back to 1876 when the university fielded its first basketball team. However, it was in the early 1980s that the Hoyas rose to national prominence, particularly under the leadership of legendary coach John Thompson Jr. The men's basketball team won its first NCAA Championship in 1984, led by star player Patrick Ewing. The Hoyas became known for their tough, physical style of play, which was a hallmark of Thompson's coaching philosophy. Over the years, Georgetown has continued to build a rich tradition in both men's and women's sports, with significant achievements in basketball, soccer, and lacrosse. The university's mascot, Jack the Bulldog, has also become an iconic symbol of the Hoyas' spirit and dedication.
