Initially competing as a member of the Tennessee Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the Governors became a part of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) in 1975, which has been a significant aspect of their identity. Over the decades, Austin Peay has developed a diverse athletic program that includes sports such as football, basketball, baseball, and softball.
