Wichita Symphony Orchestra History
The Wichita Symphony Orchestra (WSO) has a rich and storied history dating back to its founding in 1944. Initially formed to bring live classical music to Wichita, Kansas, the orchestra has evolved significantly over the decades. In its early years, the WSO was a community-based ensemble, relying heavily on local musicians passionate about enriching the cultural landscape of the region. The orchestra held its first concert at the Central High School Auditorium and quickly gained popularity. Over the years, the symphony expanded its repertoire and increased the number of concerts, incorporating both classical staples and contemporary works. In 1960, the WSO moved to the Century II Performing Arts & Convention Center, which remains its home today. The elevation of professional musicianship and the hiring of esteemed conductors, including the likes of Larry Rachleff and the current Music Director, Daniel Hege, have taken the orchestra to new artistic heights. The WSO continues to attract music enthusiasts with its annual concert series, outreach programs, and commitment to music education, making it a pillar of the Wichita arts scene for nearly 80 years.
