    The UTSA Roadrunners Football program was established in 2011 as part of the University of Texas at San Antonio's efforts to expand its athletic offerings. The team began play in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and quickly gained traction, showcasing a strong commitment to building a competitive program. Under the guidance of their first head coach, Larry Coker, the Roadrunners achieved success early on, finishing their inaugural season with a 4-6 record. Over the years, the program transitioned to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in 2012, joining Conference USA in 2013.
