UTEP Miners Basketball History
The UTEP Miners basketball program, established in 1914, has a rich and storied history that spans over a century. Initially known as Texas Western College, the Miners made a significant mark in the world of college basketball in 1966 when they won the NCAA championship. This historic victory was especially notable as they became the first team with an all-Black starting lineup to win the title, defeating the University of Kentucky in an iconic game that challenged racial norms in sports. Coached by Don Haskins, the 1966 team remains a source of pride and inspiration at UTEP and beyond. Over the years, the Miners have had notable players such as Nate Archibald and Tim Hardaway, contributing to their legacy. The team plays its home games at the Don Haskins Center, which has a seating capacity of over 12,000. As a member of Conference USA, the Miners have consistently competed at a high level, striving for conference titles and NCAA tournament appearances.
