About UMBC Retrievers Basketball

Currently, the UMBC Retrievers basketball team is actively competing in the America East Conference, with their sights set on another successful season. As of the 2023 season, the team has been working hard under the guidance of head coach Jim Ferry, who took over the program in 2021. The Retrievers have been focusing on building a strong roster through recruiting and player development, aiming to replicate the success of their historic 2018 tournament run. This season, fans can look forward to exciting matchups against conference rivals and non-conference opponents, as the team seeks to improve their standings and secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament once again. The UMBC community remains highly engaged, with home games at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena drawing enthusiastic crowds, and the atmosphere is electric with school spirit. Additionally, the Retrievers are also active in community outreach, hosting events and clinics to inspire young athletes in the area. As they continue their journey in collegiate basketball, the UMBC Retrievers are committed to excellence both on and off the court.

UMBC Retrievers Basketball History

The UMBC Retrievers men's basketball team has a rich history that dates back to 1967 when the program was established. Originally a member of the NCAA Division III, the Retrievers transitioned to Division II in 1980 and then to Division I in 1986. The team is part of the America East Conference and has experienced various periods of success throughout its history. Notably, the Retrievers made headlines during the 2018 NCAA Tournament by becoming the first 16-seed in history to defeat a 1-seed when they upset the Virginia Cavaliers. This monumental victory not only brought national attention to the program but also solidified UMBC's place in college basketball history. Over the years, the Retrievers have produced several notable players and have built a dedicated fan base that passionately supports the team during its seasonal endeavors.
