    UAB Blazers Football History

The UAB Blazers football program, representing the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has a rich and tumultuous history that dates back to its inception in 1991. The program was established as part of the university's expansion of its athletic department and quickly gained recognition for its competitive spirit. UAB football made its debut in the NCAA Division I-AA (now FCS) before moving to Division I-A (now FBS) in 1996. The Blazers achieved their first bowl game appearance in 2004, marking a significant milestone for the program. However, in 2014, UAB's football program faced an unexpected shutdown due to budget cuts, leading to widespread protests from fans, players, and alumni. This decision was met with significant backlash, and after two years of campaigning and fundraising, the university reinstated the football program in 2017. The Blazers returned to the field in 2018, showcasing resilience and determination as they rebuilt the team. In 2020, UAB achieved a remarkable season, winning the Conference USA Championship and earning a spot in the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl, further solidifying their return to prominence in college football.
