    Tune-yards History

Tune-yards, the musical project of Merrill Garbus, emerged in 2006 in Oakland, California. The project began as a one-woman band, with Garbus using a loop pedal to create layered vocal harmonies and eclectic beats, drawing inspiration from a variety of genres including folk, punk, and world music. The debut album, 'Bird-Brains,' was released in 2009 and garnered critical acclaim for its innovative sound and DIY aesthetic. Tune-yards gained further recognition with their sophomore album, 'w h o k i l l,' released in 2011, which showcased a more polished production and a deeper exploration of themes related to identity and social issues. The album was celebrated for its vibrant, rhythmically complex tracks and led to an increased presence in the live music scene. Tune-yards quickly became known for their energetic and visually captivating live performances, often incorporating elements of audience participation and improvisation. Garbus's dynamic stage presence, combined with her unique voice and the incorporation of various instruments, created a memorable concert experience. Over the years, Tune-yards released additional albums, including 'Nikki Nack' in 2014 and 'I Can Feel You Creep Into My Private Life' in 2018, which continued to showcase their experimental sound while addressing personal and political themes. Tune-yards’ music evolved, reflecting a blend of influences while maintaining their distinctive style, making them a significant part of the indie music landscape.
