  • About Toronto Symphony Orchestra

As of October 2023, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra continues to thrive, offering a diverse array of concerts and events that cater to a wide audience. The TSO's current concert season features a blend of classical performances, contemporary works, and collaborative projects with various artists. Notably, the TSO has embraced innovative programming that includes themed concerts, family-friendly events, and community outreach initiatives that aim to make orchestral music more accessible to the public. This season, the orchestra has been featuring a series of concerts celebrating the works of underrepresented composers, thus promoting inclusivity within the classical music sphere. Special events, such as holiday concerts and performances with popular artists, have also been a significant draw, attracting both long-time classical music enthusiasts and new audiences alike. In addition, the TSO has made strides in digital outreach, providing live-streamed performances and virtual events that allow fans to enjoy their music from the comfort of their homes, a trend that gained momentum during the pandemic. The orchestra is also actively involved in educational programs that engage young musicians and foster a love for orchestral music in the next generation. As the TSO looks ahead, it aims to continue expanding its artistic horizons while remaining a cornerstone of Toronto's vibrant cultural scene.

    Toronto Symphony Orchestra History

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) has a rich history that dates back to 1923 when it was founded by conductor and music director Sir Ernest MacMillan. Initially known as the Toronto Symphony, the orchestra has evolved significantly over the decades, establishing itself as one of Canada’s premier orchestral ensembles. The TSO gained prominence in the 1930s, when it began to perform regularly at Massey Hall, a venue that became synonymous with its identity. Throughout the years, the orchestra has experienced various leadership changes, including notable music directors like Sir Andrew Davis and Peter Oundjian, who have contributed to elevating its artistic standards and expanding its repertoire. The TSO has a history of commissioning new works and collaborating with renowned composers, which has enriched the Canadian musical landscape. In 1979, the TSO was designated as the official orchestra of the City of Toronto, further solidifying its status as a cultural institution. Over the years, the orchestra has not only performed classical masterpieces but has also branched out into contemporary genres, pop music collaborations, and multi-media performances, showcasing its versatility and commitment to engaging diverse audiences. The TSO has released numerous recordings and has toured internationally, bringing the sound of Toronto to music lovers around the globe.
