The Divine 9 Greek Letter & HBCU Brunch History

The Divine 9 refers to the nine historically Black fraternities and sororities that comprise the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). Established in the early 20th century, these organizations were formed to provide support and community for African American college students facing segregation and discrimination in educational institutions. The Divine 9 organizations are Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, and Iota Phi Theta among the fraternities, and Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, and Sigma Gamma Rho among the sororities. These organizations have played a crucial role in the civil rights movement and continue to advocate for social justice and community service. HBCUs, or Historically Black Colleges and Universities, are institutions founded before 1964 with the primary mission of serving the African American community. The Divine 9 has deep roots in HBCUs, fostering brotherhood and sisterhood among students, promoting academic excellence, and providing leadership opportunities. Over the years, the connection between the Divine 9 and HBCUs has led to various events, including brunches that celebrate the achievements of members and promote networking.
