The Charlatans History
The Charlatans, often heralded as one of the seminal bands of the '90s Madchester scene, originated in Northwich, Cheshire, England, in 1989. Formed by vocalist Tim Burgess, guitarist Dean Carter, bassist Martin Blunt, and drummer Jon Brookes, the band initially drew influences from the psychedelic sounds of the 1960s, as well as the burgeoning indie rock of the late '80s. Their debut album, 'Some Friendly,' was released in 1990 and was a commercial success, featuring hits like 'The Only One I Know' and 'Then.' This album cemented their place in the Britpop movement alongside contemporaries such as Oasis and Blur. Throughout the '90s, The Charlatans released a string of successful albums, including 'Between 10th and 11th' and 'Tellin' Stories,' which showcased their evolving sound, blending alternative rock with dance-pop elements. Following the untimely death of drummer Jon Brookes in 2013, the band's resilience shone through, as they continued to tour and release new material, keeping their legacy alive while also adapting to changes in the music landscape.
