The Bar-Kays History
The Bar-Kays were formed in 1966 in Memphis, Tennessee, and originally began as a backing band for the legendary Otis Redding. The ensemble's original lineup consisted of members who were still in their teens, demonstrating exceptional musical talent from the very start. Their early work was characterized by a unique blend of soul, funk, and rhythm and blues, helping to define the Stax sound of the 1960s. Tragically, the group experienced a devastating loss when several members perished in a plane crash in 1967, an event that nearly ended their journey.
