    Temple Owls Football History

Temple Owls Football has a rich history that dates back to 1888, making it one of the oldest college football programs in the United States. Initially, the team played in local leagues and primarily consisted of students from the Temple University community in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The program experienced significant growth over the decades, transitioning from local tournaments to becoming a member of the NCAA. In the 1930s, Temple gained national attention, particularly under the leadership of legendary coach Pop Warner, who introduced innovative strategies that improved the team's performance. The Owls became a powerhouse in the Eastern football scene, earning their first bowl invitation in 1935 and continuing to build a solid reputation throughout the mid-20th century. The 1970s and 1980s were challenging decades for the Owls, leading to fluctuating success and eventual membership in various conferences. However, the early 2000s marked a resurgence for the program, particularly after joining the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and later the American Athletic Conference (AAC). Under head coach Matt Rhule and subsequent coaches, Temple experienced a renaissance in the 2010s, culminating in winning the AAC Championship in 2016, which solidified their status as a competitive force in college football.
