This season, the orchestra will perform a range of classical repertoire, including works by renowned composers such as Beethoven, Dvořák, and Tchaikovsky, alongside contemporary pieces that resonate with today's audiences. TSO is also expanding its outreach by hosting open rehearsals, where community members can witness the creative process first-hand and interact with musicians. Moreover, the orchestra maintains a strong online presence, offering live-streamed concerts for those unable to attend in person, thereby broadening its reach and accommodating the evolving preferences of concert-goers. Community engagement initiatives continue to flourish, embodying TSO's ethos of inclusion and accessibility. As they celebrate their heritage, the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra remains committed to fostering a compelling cultural legacy in the heart of Florida.
Tallahassee Symphony History
The Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra (TSO) has a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1964. It was initiated by a group of local music enthusiasts led by conductor and visionary Dr. R. William (Bill) McDade. The organization's mission was to promote live orchestral music in Tallahassee, Florida, and to create an accessible artistic experience for the community. Over the decades, the TSO has grown substantially in both size and scope, under the leadership of various talented conductors who have contributed to its evolution into a premier performing arts organization in the region. The orchestra has always aimed to provide a diverse repertoire, ranging from classical masterworks to contemporary pieces, highlighting the talents of both resident musicians and guest artists from around the world. Notably, in 1989, the orchestra began performing at the Riley Center, which further solidified its status as a professional orchestra. In recent years, TSO has engaged in several significant outreach initiatives designed to cultivate a love for classical music among younger generations, including school concerts and collaborations with local musicians and composers.
