    Southern Utah Thunderbirds Football History

    Southern Utah University (SUU) established its football program in 1963. Initially competing at the junior college level, the Thunderbirds transitioned to NCAA Division II in 1980 and later moved to Division I-FCS in 2012. Over the years, Southern Utah football has made a name for itself within the Big Sky Conference, showcasing its capabilities through various successful seasons and playoff appearances. The team has had a rich history of notable players and coaches, contributing to the development of a strong football culture. In 2013, the Thunderbirds had one of their most successful seasons, finishing with a 9-3 record and making it to the FCS playoffs for the first time in school history. The team plays its home games at Eccles Coliseum, which has a seating capacity of over 8,500 and provides a vibrant atmosphere for fans and alumni alike.
