Southern Methodist University (SMU) Mustangs Basketball has a rich history that dates back to its inception in 1911. The program began as a member of various conferences, ultimately joining the Southwest Conference (SWC) in 1918, where it gained significant notoriety. The Mustangs saw their first major success in the 1950s, highlighted by their participation in the NCAA tournament and the establishment of a loyal fan base. The team's peak performance came in the 1980s, particularly during the era under head coach Dave Bliss, leading the Mustangs to the NCAA tournament multiple times and achieving a notable Elite Eight run in 1987. However, the program faced a major setback in the early 1990s due to severe sanctions from the NCAA related to recruiting violations, which hampered its growth and success for many years.
