Soul Coughing History
Soul Coughing was an American alternative rock band formed in 1992 in New York City. The band was founded by singer Mike Doughty, who had previously been involved in the New York City music scene, along with other talented musicians including bassist Sebastian Steinberg, drummer Yuval Gabay, and keyboardist Mark de Gli Antoni. They gained popularity in the mid-1990s with their unique blend of rock, jazz, and hip-hop, characterized by Doughty's spoken-word style vocals and the band's eclectic instrumentation. Soul Coughing's debut album, 'Ruby Vroom,' released in 1994, featured hits like 'Super Bon Bon' and 'Circles.' The band became known for their energetic live performances, which often showcased their improvisational skills and Doughty's charismatic stage presence. Their follow-up albums, 'Irresistible Bliss' (1996) and 'El Oso' (1998), further solidified their reputation, with tracks such as 'Soundtrack to Mary' and 'Blue Eyed Devil' becoming fan favorites. However, despite their success, the band disbanded in 2000, with Doughty embarking on a solo career while the other members pursued various musical projects. Soul Coughing's distinctive sound and live performances have influenced many artists and continue to resonate with fans, maintaining their legacy in the alternative music scene.
