Sons of Champlin History
Sons of Champlin is an American rock band founded in 1967 in San Rafael, California. The band was formed by Bill Champlin and a group of talented musicians who aimed to create a blend of rock, jazz, and soul influences. They gained prominence during the late 1960s and early 1970s, contributing to the San Francisco music scene. Notably, they frequently performed at iconic venues such as the Fillmore and the Avalon Ballroom. Their music is characterized by intricate harmonies, skilled instrumentation, and a charismatic stage presence. Throughout their career, the band released several albums, with 'Loosen Up Naturally' (1971) and 'The Sons' (1973) being among their most notable works. However, it was during the 1970s that they truly found their stride, opening for famous acts like The Grateful Dead and Chicago, the latter of whom Bill Champlin would eventually join as a member. After a hiatus in the 1980s, Sons of Champlin reunited in 1997 and have continued to perform and record with a mix of original songs and fan favorites, maintaining a loyal fan base and finding new audiences as classic rock has seen a resurgence in popularity. Their influence can be seen in the way they fused diverse musical styles, pushing the boundaries of classic rock and leaving an indelible mark on the genre.
