So Percussion History
So Percussion was founded in 1999 by a group of undergraduate students at the University of North Texas. Initially formed as an ensemble dedicated to exploring both classical and contemporary percussion music, they quickly gained recognition for their innovative performances and collaborations. Over the years, So Percussion has significantly influenced the contemporary music and theatre scene by blurring the lines between musical performance and theatrical storytelling. Their unique approach combines elements of visual art, movement, and sound, challenging audiences’ perceptions and expanding the role of percussion in theatrical works. The ensemble has premiered numerous compositions, worked extensively with composers like Steve Reich and David Lang, and contributed to major theatrical productions across the United States and abroad. Their exploration of rhythm and narrative has made them one of the most sought-after percussion groups in the theatre world, where their dynamic energy and creativity continue to redefine live performance.
