Sleepytime Gorilla Museum History
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum (SGM) is a unique and experimental art-rock band that originated in San Francisco, California, in 1999. They are known for their eclectic sound that combines elements of rock, classical, and avant-garde music, incorporating a wide variety of instruments. The band consists of founding members: the vocalist Carla Kihlstedt, who is also a violinist, the drummer and percussionist Matthias Bossi, and the bassist and guitarist Dan Rathbun. Their musical style is heavily characterized by a theatrical approach, marked by intricate compositions and elaborate performances that often involve elaborate costumes and multimedia presentations. The group's debut album, 'Grand Opening,' was released in 2001, which immediately set them apart from mainstream bands with its unconventional structure and instrumental complexity. Over the years, SGM developed a cult following, and their live shows became known for their immersive experiences, filled with a sense of drama and engagement. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum continued to innovate with their subsequent albums 'Of Natural History' (2004) and 'In Glorious Times' (2007), further solidifying their influence in the avant-garde music scene. In 2015, they announced a temporary hiatus after the release of 'The Last Anomaly' EP, leaving fans eager for any sign of a reunion or new music.
