San Diego Sockers History
The San Diego Sockers are a professional indoor soccer team based in San Diego, California, and have a rich history that dates back to their inception in 1978. Originally founded in the original North American Soccer League, the team transitioned to indoor soccer in 1980 when they joined the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). The Sockers quickly became one of the most iconic teams in indoor soccer, known for their dynamic style of play and ability to draw large crowds. With legendary players like Brian Quinn, Zoltan Toth, and Julio Cesar, the team won multiple championships throughout the 1980s and 1990s, solidifying their place as a powerhouse in indoor soccer. Their most notable achievements came in the 1981-1982 season when they won their first MISL championship, followed by a streak of different titles in subsequent years, including a remarkable seven championships in eight years. Despite facing challenges with league stability and the evolution of indoor soccer, the Sockers have continued to adapt; they found new life in the Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) in the 2000s and re-emerged in the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) in 2013, where they have continued to build on their legacy.
