Royal Winnipeg Ballet History
The Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) is one of the oldest and most prestigious ballet companies in North America, founded in 1939 by Gweneth Lloyd and Betty Farrally. Their vision was to create a ballet company that would not only present classical ballet but also develop a uniquely Canadian voice in dance. Over the years, the RWB has built a rich repertoire that includes classical ballets, contemporary works, and original creations by leading choreographers. The company gained international recognition for its innovative performances and commitment to high artistic standards. In 1953, the RWB became the first ballet company in North America to receive a royal designation, which solidified its status as a cultural institution. Throughout its history, the RWB has nurtured numerous talents who have gone on to have successful careers in dance and has contributed significantly to the growth of ballet in Canada and beyond. The company has also been a pioneer in dance education, establishing the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, which trains dancers from around the world in the art of ballet.
