Portland Cello Project History
The Portland Cello Project (PCP) was founded in 2009 by a group of passionate cellists in the vibrant city of Portland, Oregon. The ensemble emerged from a desire to push the boundaries of traditional cello music and explore genres outside classical music. The founding musicians, led by cellist Douglas Jenkins, aimed to create a unique platform for cellists to collaborate and showcase their talents in innovative ways. Initially, the group performed in intimate venues, emphasizing spontaneity and creativity, which quickly attracted a dedicated following. As the project gained momentum, it evolved into a collective featuring various cellists and musicians, allowing for diverse soundscapes. The PCP's repertoire spans a wide range of genres—from classical to pop and beyond—often highlighting contemporary compositions and arrangements. This approach has positioned PCP as a catalyst for adventurous collaborations, engaging with a mix of local artists and national acts. Over the years, the ensemble has performed at numerous festivals and events, broadening its reach and impact in the live music scene. Their dedication to incorporating visual arts and interactive experiences within their live performances has further distinguished them from traditional acts, offering audiences a multi-sensory experience.
