Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra History
The Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra (PBO) was founded in 1981 and is renowned for its dedication to the performance of Baroque and Classical music on period instruments, a practice that brings authenticity and a unique sound to its concerts. Based in San Francisco, California, the orchestra was established by artistic director Nicolás McGegan, who has been instrumental in shaping its artistic vision and expanding its repertoire. Under his leadership, PBO has built a reputation for not only preserving the music of composers such as J.S. Bach, Vivaldi, and Mozart but also for performing lesser-known works that have contributed to the rich tapestry of early music. Over the years, the orchestra has collaborated with numerous prominent soloists and has been integral in revitalizing interest in historical performance practices. PBO’s commitment to quality has earned it numerous accolades, and it continues to engage audiences with passionate interpretations of classical masterpieces, often in innovative concert formats that include works from the Renaissance through the Classical period.
