Northeastern Huskies Hockey History
The Northeastern Huskies men's ice hockey team, representing Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, has a rich and storied history that dates back to its inception in 1929. Initially, the team played in various regional leagues before joining the NCAA in 1948. The Huskies have experienced numerous ups and downs throughout their history, with early struggles in the 1950s and 1960s. However, the program started to gain prominence in the 1980s under the leadership of coach Bruce Crowder. One of the significant milestones in the team's history came in 1982 when they reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time. The team continued to improve, culminating in their first Beanpot championship in 1980, a significant annual tournament featuring four of Boston's colleges. The 1990s and early 2000s saw the Huskies make multiple NCAA tournament appearances, showcasing the team's growth and competitiveness. Under the guidance of current coach Jim Madigan, who took over in 2011, Northeastern has solidified its position as a formidable force in college hockey. The team achieved a remarkable milestone by reaching the NCAA tournament five times in six years from 2016 to 2021, showcasing their sustained excellence in the sport. The Huskies play their home games at Matthews Arena, one of the oldest ice hockey arenas in the world, which adds to the rich tradition and passionate fanbase surrounding the program.
