Mount St. Marys Mountaineers History
The Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers, representing Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland, have a rich and storied athletic history that dates back to the institution's founding in 1808. The university became a member of the NCAA in 1988, and since then, the Mountaineers have participated in various sports. The school is particularly known for its basketball program, which achieved prominence in the early 1990s under head coach Jim Phelan. The men’s basketball team made several NCAA tournament appearances, including a memorable run in 2008 when they reached the 'Big Dance' after winning the Northeast Conference (NEC) championship.
