Maui Invitational History
The Maui Invitational, officially known as the Maui Jim Maui Invitational, is one of the most prestigious early-season college basketball tournaments in the United States. Established in 1984 by former Chaminade University basketball coach, Jim Bolla, the tournament was initially hosted by Chaminade University, which gained fame for its stunning upset of the Virginia Cavaliers, the top-ranked team, in the 1982-83 season. The tournament, held annually during Thanksgiving week, takes place in Lahaina, Maui, and features an impressive lineup of highly ranked teams from around the country. The first tournament saw just eight teams competing, but it quickly gained popularity, becoming a premier event in the college basketball calendar and attracting top-tier talent. Over the years, institutions such as Duke, Kansas, North Carolina, and Arizona have participated, making it a showcase for future NBA stars. The unique location and the spirit of Aloha set the Maui Invitational apart, offering teams and fans alike a memorable experience and a chance to play in paradise. Over the decades, it has evolved, gaining recognition and an esteemed reputation within collegiate athletics, highlighting both emerging and powerhouse programs.
