The Hawks' athletic teams were initially part of the NAIA before transitioning to NCAA Division I in the late 1980s. The university is a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), where the Hawks have found a competitive home against other historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
