Liberty Flames Football History
Liberty Flames Football has a rich history that dates back to 1973 when the program was established at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. Originally known as the Liberty College Flames, the team started as a club sport, playing its first game in 1973. The Flames became a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in 1977, where they quickly made a name for themselves. Under the leadership of coach Ken Karcher, the team enjoyed success in the late 1980s and early 1990s, culminating in a national championship game appearance in 1989. The Flames transitioned to NCAA Division I-AA (now FCS) in 1988, and later joined the Big South Conference in 2002. In 2017, Liberty took a significant step by moving to the NCAA Division I FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision), allowing them to compete at the highest level of college football. The Flames have consistently improved their performance, culminating in a historic 2020 season where they finished with a record of 10-1, including a victory over the University of Coastal Carolina in the Cure Bowl. This marked Liberty's first-ever bowl game win, solidifying their status as a rising program in college football.
