    Liberty Flames Basketball History

Liberty Flames Basketball has a rich history that dates back to its inception in 1971. The program started as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and gradually transitioned to NCAA Division II before finally making its way to NCAA Division I in 1988. Over the decades, Liberty has established itself as a competitive force in college basketball, with notable playoff appearances and conference championships. The Flames play their home games at the Vines Center, a multi-purpose arena that seats over 8,000 fans. Significant milestones in the program include multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, particularly in recent years, as the team has seen a resurgence under current head coach, Ritchie McKay. The Flames gained national attention during the 2019 NCAA Tournament when they made a stunning run, defeating the top-seeded Mississippi State, marking the program's first tournament win since the 1990s. The success on the court has been fueled by a commitment to building a solid program focused on both athletic and academic excellence, emphasizing the importance of character and integrity in student-athletes.
