Korngold History
Erich Wolfgang Korngold was a child prodigy born in 1897 in Brünn, Austria-Hungary (now Brno, Czech Republic). He began composing music at a remarkably young age and quickly gained recognition for his talent. By the age of 11, he had already composed his first opera, 'Der Ring des Polykrates', which premiered in 1914. Korngold's early works were celebrated for their lush harmonies and melodic innovation, drawing inspiration from the late Romantic tradition, particularly composers like Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler. He became a prominent figure in the early 20th-century music scene, with his operas, symphonies, and chamber works performed in major European cities.
However, Korngold's career took a significant turn when he moved to Hollywood in the late 1930s to escape the rise of Nazism in Europe. He soon became a leading composer for film scores, winning two Academy Awards for his contributions to the movie industry. His unique ability to blend classical music with the cinematic style earned him acclaim, and his scores for films like 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' and 'Captain Blood' showcased his talent for creating emotionally resonant music. Despite his success in Hollywood, Korngold continued to write concert music, including symphonies and concertos, which were often overshadowed by his film work during his lifetime. Korngold's music experienced a revival in the late 20th century, as audiences and musicians began to rediscover his concert works, leading to a resurgence of interest in his compositions.
