Jazz at Lincoln Center History
Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) was founded in 1987 by renowned trumpeter Wynton Marsalis with the mission to promote and preserve jazz as a vital part of American culture. The organization started with a series of concerts and educational programs that celebrated the rich history and diversity of jazz music. It quickly gained recognition for its commitment to presenting high-quality performances and providing a platform for both established and emerging artists. In 2004, JALC opened its permanent home, the Frederick P. Rose Hall, located at the Time Warner Center in New York City. The hall features three performance spaces, including the iconic Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, which offers stunning views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline, creating a unique atmosphere for enjoying live jazz. Over the years, JALC has hosted an impressive roster of legendary performers, including Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and more contemporary artists like Norah Jones and Christian McBride. Through its extensive programming, JALC has played a crucial role in educating audiences about jazz history and its significance in American music, while also fostering an appreciation for the genre among younger generations.
