    Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra History

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO) has a rich history that dates back to 1930 when it was founded as a community orchestra. Over the years, it has evolved into one of the leading orchestras in the United States. The ISO's inaugural concert took place in the old Scottish Rite Cathedral. In the 1940s, the orchestra began to gain national recognition, and by the 1950s, it was performing regularly in the newly built Hilbert Circle Theatre, which became its home. The ISO has been led by several notable music directors, including the legendary Erich Kunzel, who served from 1965 to 2009, and Krzysztof Urbański, who took the helm in 2011. Throughout its history, the ISO has embraced a commitment to musical excellence, featuring a diverse repertoire that includes classical masterpieces, contemporary works, and collaborative performances with other art forms. The orchestra has also been dedicated to education and outreach, introducing the joys of symphonic music to younger audiences through various programs and concerts.
