Houston Cougars Football History
The Houston Cougars football program began in 1946 and has since developed into a prominent force in college football. Initially a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, the Cougars joined the Southwest Conference in 1971, where they gained national recognition. Under the leadership of legendary coach Bill Yeoman, they became known for their innovative run-and-shoot offense, which revolutionized college football during the 1970s and 1980s. The program achieved great success, highlighted by a trip to the Cotton Bowl in 1976, and a string of bowl appearances throughout the 1980s. The Cougars gained national prominence in the early 1990s under coach John Jenkins, culminating in a trip to the 1991 Cotton Bowl and producing several NFL stars, including Andre Ware and David Klinger. The Cougars have experienced ups and downs over the years, including a period of struggle in the late 2000s but have bounced back to become competitive in recent years. They joined the American Athletic Conference (AAC) in 2013, further solidifying their presence in college football.
