    Florida Atlantic Owls Football History

Florida Atlantic University (FAU) established its football program in 2001, beginning play as a member of the NCAA Division I-AA (now known as the Football Championship Subdivision). The Owls quickly made an impact, achieving their first winning season in 2003 and earning a trip to the NCAA playoffs. In 2007, FAU transitioned to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and joined the Sun Belt Conference, where they continued to develop their program. Notably, the Owls secured their first bowl game appearance in 2007, which they won against Memphis in the New Orleans Bowl. This victory marked a significant milestone in the program's young history. The Owls experienced success under head coach Howard Schnellenberger, who famously led the team and the university to greater visibility. Under his leadership, FAU achieved its first conference championship in 2007 and followed it up with another bowl appearance in 2008. The program continued to evolve, with various coaching changes and a move to Conference USA in 2013. Over the years, the Owls have produced several notable players and have experienced ups and downs in performance, but their commitment to growth and competitiveness has remained strong.
