Initially, the team was formed to provide students with an opportunity to engage in competitive sports, and it quickly became a source of pride for the university and the local community. Over the years, the Tigers have experienced various phases of growth and development, including periods of success and challenges. The program played in the NAIA and was a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) for many years, where they showcased their talent against other historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
