Digable Planets History
Digable Planets emerged in the early 1990s as a groundbreaking hip-hop trio from Brooklyn, New York. Consisting of Ishmael 'Butterfly' Butler, Craig 'Doodlebug' Irving, and Mary Ann 'Ladybug Mecca' Vieira, they became known for their unique blend of jazz and hip-hop, which resonated deeply with audiences and critics alike. Their debut album, 'Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space)', was released in 1993 and featured hits like 'Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)', which showcased their signature sound and lyrical prowess. The album was both a commercial success and a critical darling, earning them a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 1994. Following their debut, the group's sophomore album, 'Blowout Comb', released in 1994, further solidified their status in the hip-hop scene with its more complex beats and themes. However, by the late 1990s, the trio disbanded to pursue solo projects, leading to a temporary hiatus. In the years that followed, they reunited for tours and special performances, rekindling their connection with fans and introducing their timeless music to new generations. Their influence on the hip-hop genre, especially regarding the jazz rap subgenre, is notable, with many contemporary artists citing them as significant inspirations in their work.
