Def Poetry Reunion History
Def Poetry Jam, which first aired on HBO in 2002, was a groundbreaking television series aimed at showcasing the talents of spoken word poets from diverse backgrounds. Created by Russell Simmons, the show was a pivotal moment in promoting spoken word and poetry within mainstream culture. The series featured performances from a wide array of poets, including the likes of Saul Williams, Jessica Care moore, and many others who captivated audiences with their powerful and emotive works. Not only did it provide a platform for established poets, but it also nurtured the next generation of spoken word artists, encouraging them to articulate their thoughts and experiences through their craft. The fusion of hip-hop culture with poetic expression struck a chord with viewers, leading to several seasons of the show before it concluded in 2007. In 2020, the legacy of Def Poetry Jam continued to resonate as poets and fans alike sought to celebrate and reconnect through live events, leading to a Def Poetry Reunion that aimed to bring together iconic performers for new audiences to experience the magic of spoken word performance.
