    About Crowns

Currently, Crowns is experiencing a resurgence in popularity as theaters continue to embrace diverse narratives in their programming. Recent productions have featured innovative staging and fresh reinterpretations, keeping the spirit of the original work while appealing to modern audiences. In 2023, select theaters across the country have hosted both professional and community productions, often integrating local choir members to enhance the musical experience. As part of the season's lineup, some performances have even included talkback sessions with cast members, fostering a deeper understanding of the themes surrounding identity and community ties. Crowns provides an opportunity for reflection on faith and resilience, making it an incredibly relevant piece amidst contemporary societal discussions. As it continues to be staged, it serves not only as entertainment but also as a vibrant commentary on the African American experience, encouraging dialogue about the importance of heritage and personal expression within the community.

    Crowns History

Crowns is a vibrant theatrical piece that premiered in 2002, created by playwright Regina Taylor. The work explores the culture of African American women and their powerful expression through church hats, which are more than mere fashion; they symbolize faith, community, and identity. The play intertwines narratives and gospel music, allowing characters to share their personal stories and experiences while showcasing the significance of their crowns—hats that reflect their triumphs, trials, and heritage. It was originally inspired by the book 'Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats' by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry, which features stunning photographs and narratives that celebrate the essence of the Church in African American life. Since its debut, Crowns has been performed in various esteemed theaters all over the United States, captivating audiences with its heartfelt messages and stunning visuals.
