Central Michigan Chippewas Football History
The Central Michigan Chippewas football program began in 1896 and has a rich and storied history within the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. The team, representing Central Michigan University, is a member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and has experienced various phases of success over the decades. Early in their history, the Chippewas played as an independent team before joining the Mid-American Conference in 1970. The program saw its first significant success in the 1970s, culminating in a national championship in 1974 when they won the NCAA College Division championship. Under the leadership of various head coaches, including the notable Herb Deromedi, the Chippewas achieved numerous conference titles and bowl appearances.
