Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra History
The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) has a rich history that dates back to 1955, when it was originally formed as the Calgary Philharmonic Society. The orchestra started with a modest goal: to bring high-quality orchestral music to Calgary's residents. Over the years, it has evolved to become one of Canada's premier orchestras, renowned for its artistic excellence and community engagement. The CPO's first concert was held in the historic Calgary Auditorium, showcasing local talent and guest artists alike. In 1972, the orchestra was designated as the official symphony orchestra of Calgary, and it began to expand its repertoire and performances significantly. Under the leadership of various music directors, including the notable Mario Bernardi and Roberto Minczuk, the CPO has embraced a wide range of musical styles, from classical masterworks to contemporary compositions and popular music collaborations. The orchestra has also built strong relationships with local composers and artists, premiering many new works and contributing to the cultural fabric of Calgary. As the CPO celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2005, it marked a significant milestone that underscored its commitment to music education and outreach programs, making classical music accessible to diverse audiences throughout the region.
