Artemis History
Artemis, an all-female jazz ensemble, was formed in 2019 under the leadership of acclaimed jazz pianist and composer, Jason Moran. The group was created to celebrate the contributions of women in jazz and to provide a platform for female musicians to showcase their talents. The ensemble’s name, Artemis, is derived from the Greek goddess of the hunt and wilderness, symbolizing strength, independence, and creativity. The band features a diverse lineup of talented musicians from various backgrounds, including established artists and emerging talents, each bringing their unique style and perspective to the group. Their debut album, released in 2020, garnered critical acclaim and highlighted the richness of the contemporary jazz scene while addressing gender representation in the industry. Since their inception, Artemis has performed at prestigious venues and festivals, earning a reputation for their dynamic live performances, which blend original compositions with innovative interpretations of jazz standards.
